Free Things to do in Maui

Visiting the Maui Tropical Plantation is a favorite family friendly activity for our family. Sometimes we'll make it a family outing or Weston and I will meet some friends for a nice morning outing during the week.

The Maui Tropical Plantation does not require an admission fee, therefore making it extremely budget friendly and perfect for spur of the moment half-day excursions. There are fee based activities available such as the 40-minute Plantation Train Tour  (wheelchair accessible) or the Flyin' Hawaiiain Zipline. It is recommended to book activities in advance.

Visiting the Maui Tropical Plantation is a great low cost outing and an amazing opportunity to get those beautiful, lush Hawaii travel photos you've been craving. It's a very enjoyable outing to leisurely meander through the Tropical Gardens nestled along Waikapu Valley, visit the gift shops for local faire, and have a bite to eat at The Mill House Restaurant.

Walking the Plantation

There are paved paths throughout the plantation with marked tropical plants and flowers so you'll be able to easily identify any species. Stop by the pond to observe mallards and the Hawaiian NeNe Goose (if you're lucky you may even spot an egg!), or share a special moment under the wooden gazebo. This is a great place to tire out the kids or to simply admire Maui's natural beauties and God's creations. If you're fortunate enough, you may catch the Blue Jade Vine blooming during your visit. The Blue Jade Vine only blooms three times year (usually March, July, October).

For the Foodies

Enjoy breathtaking views of Waikapu Valley and marvel at historic sugar cane mills while dining at The Mill House. The Mill House restaurant offers an innovative and fresh take on the cuisine and cultures that helped shape Maui. "The kitchen and bar apply an innovative approach to fresh, local ingredients in dishes that honor the cultures of those who emigrated from Japan, China, Spain, Korea, Portugal, and other distant lands to work in Maui’s sugarcane industry a century and more ago."- Maui Tropical Plantation

Book a seat at the Chef's Table for an interactive, multi-course dining experience from a Chef's perspective. Learn about local ingredients, unique pairings, and hear personal stories from The Tropical Plantation's own chefs. Guests are encouraged to interact with the chefs, ask questions, and take photos.

Roasting Maui Coffee at the Mill House Roasting Co. Enjoy hand crafted coffee beverages from local coffee farms on Maui- some select roasts are from beans grown on the plantation. The Mill House Roasting Co. also offers Nitro Cold Brew Coffee and Kombucha on tap for your afternoon pick-me-up.
